Minnesota mall attack linked to ISIS

An ISIS-related terrorist attack left 10 wounded at Crossroads Mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota on Sept. 17, FBI says.

“All of a sudden chaos just broke out,”  said Ashley Bane, a J.C. Penney employee at Crossroads mall. “There was a bunch of people running into the J.C. Penney mall entrance, and they were just screaming that someone was going around the mall stabbing people.”

The suspect, 22 year old Dahir Adan, was shot dead at the scene. It appears that Adan acted alone, receiving praise from an ISIS-linked news agency. However, FBI are still calling it a “potential act of terrorism.”

St. Cloud is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in Minnesota. Yussuf, a director at the #unitedcloud organization to assuage anti-Muslim tensions in St. Cloud, says it is unlikely that there is any connection between Adan and ISIS.

Muslims in Minnesota have faced an increased amount of prejudice in recent years. Somali community leaders are fearful of the potential islamophobic backlash as a result of the stabbing.

“ISIS does not represent us,” said Lul Hersi, the mother of one of Adan’s victims, to CNN.

“It does not represent Islam, and it does not represent Somalis.”
