The girl’s golf season officially kicked off when the Indians (1-3) played on Sept. 11 against Sonora High School at La Mirada Golf Course. Although they didn’t win, the team had an overall great match.

Senior Kate Torres has played on the team since it was created in 2015. Though at times the other teams seem intimidating, Torres is excited for the challenge.

“My goal is to [keep my scores] in the forties. I think I’m definitely going to improve on everything and my scores will be lower,” Torres said. “My goal for the team is for everyone to be positive about playing.”

The girl’s golf team has always accepted new players, even those with no experience, in the hopes of shaping them to become better golf players.

Playing her first year of golf on the FUHS golf team, freshman Malia Preciado is still learning the ropes.

“The hardest part was probably getting it near the hole since I’ve only been playing for a month, but it is a fun experience so far,” Preciado said.

Sometimes golf can get frustrating, but junior Kara Taylor tries to remain positive and try a different approach.

“[I try to] think of a different approach to my ball,” Taylor said. “And how great of a shot it would be if I could conduct that shot as accurately as I could have hoped.”

Although the girl’s golf team is fairly new to FUHS, it has created a welcoming community where anyone can play and learn the game of golf. The goal of the team is not to win every match, but to take it step by step and improve on their own game.
