Through service project Project Linus, FUHS’s National Honors Society made blankets to keep impoverished children warm during the holiday season.

On Dec. 15, the NHS members met in the lower library to create blankets. The groups knotted the cut ends of the fabric together or tied two fabrics on top of one another to make the blanket.

NHS President and senior Brittany Ruiz explains the purpose of this annual service event. “At our Project Linus event we [seek] to make and donate the most blankets that we can,” Ruiz said.

Project Linus centers around donating blankets to children— either those who are in social services, hospitals, shelters or other places where they need extra encouragement.

Senior Kristi Rho attended this year’s event, wanting to contribute to this good cause.

“It’s December right now so it’s obviously cold. Children that don’t have the supplies and materials are probably freezing cold at night, barely staying warm,” Rho said. “It’s a good feeling knowing that a little can go a long way.”

Junior Alanis Merritt, who participated in last year’s event, wanted the opportunity to give something meaningful.

I wanted to do something that could actually make a difference in someone’s life,” Merritt said. “I feel like making blankets for someone might seem insignificant— because when you go to bed at night you always have a blanket— but there’s so many people in the United States and around the world that don’t have a blanket, they don’t have something to keep them warm or to hold if they want something.”

Many NHS members participated to meet their service project requirements, but Merritt serves to cultivate hospitality for youth just like herself. “I think a service project like this, if you think about it, can really open your eyes,” Merritt said.

FUHS’s National Honors Society continues to impact the everyday world, ensuring that children are comfortable not just during the cold holiday season but year round.
