On Jan. 8, 2019, superintendent Scott Scambray issued a letter to the entire school district, stating that beginning Feb. 1, Contraband-Detection Dogs, or Drug-Sniffing Dogs, would be used on campus to detect illegal substances. Searches will be conducted on a regular, unannounced basis.

The district has introduced this program to provide a safer learning environment, by limiting the amount of illegal substances on their campuses, which have been rising in recent years. All lockers, desks, and backpacks are all prone to inspections.

Dogs can sniff out forms of marijuana, cocaine, crack, heroin, gunpowder items, and also other commonly misused medications. Any items found in desks, lockers, cars on FUHS grounds or other student-controlled areas will be considered the property of the student assigned to the area.

There will be two parent demonstration and information meetings, one at the Sunny Hills High School library on Feb. 6, and one at the Sonora High School Theatre on Feb. 7. Both meetings will take place at 6 p.m.

The district is open to contact if there are any concerns about how the dogs will be utilized on each campus.
