New Spanish teacher Abimael Mendoza

Spanish 2, IB Spanish teacher and soccer enthusiast Abimael Mendoza attended UCI for both his undergraduate and graduate schooling. He previously taught Spanish at Costa Mesa High School and worked at Los Amigos High School as a boys soccer coach.

Mendoza prides himself on seeing his students grow into capable and determined individuals.

“I think the most rewarding thing about being a teacher is being able to see a student grow into the individual they become once they reach graduation,” Mendoza said. “Being able to play a part in that student’s life, whether it be helping them reach an academic goal, athletic goal, or personal goal is really a blessing.”

“I enjoy working with all levels of Spanish from traditional courses to Spanish for Spanish-speakers,” Mendoza said.

He recalls the enjoyment he felt on his visit to Queretaro, Mexico. “I really enjoyed seeing both the colonial and modern aspect of the city. I feel like the city is a reflection of the type of person I am,” Mendoza said.

Traveling is not the only activity Mendoza enjoys doing in his spare time.

“My main hobby is definitely soccer,” Mendoza said. “I enjoy watching soccer games and playing soccer when I get a chance, both indoors and outdoors.”

“One of my students was able to get my Liverpool FC jersey signed by my favorite soccer player Steven Gerrard at an LA Galaxy event,” Mendoza said. “A blessing, who would’ve thought teaching at FUHS would help me get that signature.”

Mendoza sees potential in all his students. “I chose to work here at FUHS because I really liked the school culture and high motivation of students to work hard in both their academic and extracurricular activities,” Mendoza said. “I think that many FUHS students become well-rounded individuals that can go on to have a positive impact on our society.”

“Working at FUHS has been a great experience so far and this is all because the students and staff have made this possible. I really feel the pride of being part of the Tribe,” Mendoza said.
