
In the 10-0 victory against Ocean View on April 30 starting pitcher Sophomore Katelynn Mathews rang up 17 strikeouts.
Competing in the Michelle Carew Classic tournament The Tribe finished fourth in the gold bracket, the girls softball team improved from the previous season.
Junior Malaya Majam-Finch says the Michelle Carew Classic tournament has helped push the team.
“The tournament has helped us by building stamina and pushing us through the long days. Since the tournament was four days long, just being able to stay focused throughout the whole game was important,” Majam-Finch said. “I think the tournaments are gonna pay off for sure.”
The Tribe hosted Esperanza (2-6) on April 22. The girls won with an impressive 9 point lead, winning 11-2. The team currently holds a 4-0 record in the Empire League, holding first undefeated. Although facing challenging competitors during pre-season tournaments, the drastic shift in league has left the team playing against weaker opponents. As a result, the team will most likely be playing division one in CIF.
The girls softball team hosted Segerstrom (1-2) on April 16 and won an easy 8-1. The Tribe scored a 14-5 win when they traveled to Ocean View (0-4) on April 11. In addition, they also hosted Garden Grove (1-1) on April 9 and secured an 11-0 win.
Junior Ariel Enriquez says that even though the team has league advantages, they’ll continue to push through the season.
“We’ve been coached to not play at their level and try to play at our level no matter what team we play,” Enriquez said.
