Unlike most student athletes, Sophia Ruesga has been a member of a varsity sports team since freshman year.

While on the track and field team, Ruesga has learned to enjoy the dependability people have on themselves when running.

“It’s really all on you and how hard you worked and how fast the human body is able to push itself,” she said.

Ruesga’s best memory in high school was when she broke two records for the FUHS track teamone for the 4×100 metre relay and one for the 4×400 metre relay. She also won the Most Valuable Player award her junior year.

Her continued passion about the sport spurred her to continue track at Hope International University.

Hope came to me and gave me a tour and I fell in love with the team and coach who was interested in not only my running abilities but also my education. When I got accepted I felt so special and happy to run for them,” she said.

Ruesga wants to major in guidance counseling education and minor in psychology at Hope. Despite her plans to have a career in those areas, her love for running still prevails; Ruesga’s dream career is to do professional track.
