FUHS brought home first, second and third place in the boy singles competition during the Empire League Individual finals. Senior Benjamin Villalobos captured first place and was named league MVP, while senior Timothy Chung placed second and freshman Che Hani placed third. Villalobos and Chung will travel to the individual CIF Championship later this month.
The single player’s commanding performance mirrored the tennis team’s dominant performance during the season.
The Indians adapted quickly to their new league, beating Garden Grove (1-7) 13-5, Laguna Hills (1-7) 12-6, and Kennedy (4-4) 14-4. These matches prepared the team for their biggest challenge: beating Valencia (6-2).
After a back and forth game, the Indians came out on top with a close score of 10-8. The Indians held on to this momentum, securing three more wins, cementing their first place in the Empire League as well as marking a historic moment in boys Fullerton tennis as the first team since 1988 to take the league championship title.
The Indians traveled to Garden Grove on April 24 for their final league match, winning 10-8, and securing their undefeated run. The team hopes to continue their success in CIF, with their first postseason match on May 7.
