My friends hate me.
Why? Because I am done. Yes, I am done with the college application process. My friends say they’re happy for me, but I know they secretly hate me, or maybe they hate themselves for procrastinating.
Regardless, I’m going to help them and help you reach the college app finish line, which is in just 25 days for most of you.
My Korean mom was the reason I finished quickly so I’ll become the Korean mom to make you finish.
I’ve come to realize the main reason seniors aren’t starting their college applications is that they think it would take weeks to complete.
Surprise, it can take one lunch period.
This specific “one lunch period long process” is focused on Cal State applications only. For UC’s and private colleges, you need to draft a few brief essays in advance. If you need help with those essays, you can seek help from the College and Career Center during lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays.
To show our readers how this is possible and what’s needed to survive college app season, I needed a volunteer senior who was not done yet. It was all too easy. I hauled senior Will McWatters, the Tribe Tribune clubs editor, down to head counselor Erin Defries’s office for a quick intervention.
Mrs. Defries showed Will and me a new process that took him five minutes to complete.
Will, however, did have to do 10 minutes of homework with his parents before our trip to the counseling office. He had to fill out the “family” section (including a question about how long his parents lived in their house) and he filled out the “demographics” section. Ultimately, Will was grateful that I made him finish his application so I could write this story. He admitted that he probably would have waited until the last minute, but he feels relieved that it was a pretty short and painless process.
The real hassle in past years has been filling out the transcript section, but this year there’s a new program that makes it so much easier.
If you follow these 8 simple steps, you can submit your application in the next five minutes.

Seniors, if the plan is to attend college next year, remember that Dec. 2 is the deadline for both Cal State and UC applications. That’s the Monday after Thanksgiving. Since the Cal State application requires no essay and I just gave you the step-by-step on how to upload your list of classes, finish that Cal State app TODAY or tomorrow at lunch. Trust me. As your temporary Korean mom, I know you will feel much better when it’s done. You’ll have something to be really grateful for on Thanksgiving.
