Sophomore Margeaux Lau featured in collaborative photography magazine

Setting up the camera, finding the right lighting, making sure the model looks good. Behind each photo, there is an unseen, extensive process that a photographer must undergo to make every shot worthwhile.
Sophomore Margeaux Lau is no stranger to this process.
“A few of my [first] photos were mediocre, but the more I took photos and the more shoots I went on, the more I developed my style,” Lau said.
Lau describes her creative vision as colorful and urban-looking. She makes sure her models look interesting and unique, and avoids anything that would be boring in her photos.
Lau credits her aunt and FUHS photo teacher Maggie Crail for her exposure to photography and for teaching her how to master the craft.
“[My aunt] lives in New York and she has a studio there, so I would practice studio shooting with her, “ Lau said. “[Mrs. Crail] taught me a lot of technical kind of things to make my photos even better.”
Most recently, Lau was featured on GUM magazine, an online magazine designed to share the work of various underground artists.
“I was super excited because cause it was the first time I’ve been published,” Lau said. “I was really honored, because it’s such a cool magazine.”
At first glance, Lau’s photos look extravagant, professional, and studio-like, but in reality, she admits some of her best works are taken in front of her own bedroom closet, with use of professional lighting and camera equipment. Lau says she is able to make something out of nothing in her photos.
“Most of my best photos are just freelance,” Lau said. “Me and my friends just mess around, and we collaborate on ideas.”
Lau hopes that photography will continue to thrive in American culture, and is hopeful for the art form to last through the ages.
“It’s something that really takes my breath away,” Lau said. “Photography is kind of like a new wave [of art] and I’m really excited to be apart of it.”
