Speech and Debate’s success in San Gabriel

The FUHS Speech and Debate team competed at the Gabrielino Screamin’ Eagles tournament this past weekend on Oct. 20. The team earned 20 finalist trophies across Varsity and Novice divisions.

Sophomore Astor Redhead earned third place in varsity Extemporaneous Speaking.

“I was nervous that I wouldn’t get top three, but it felt very nice to do well. Up to this point, every time I’ve broken I’ve only gotten fifth, so breaking that and getting top three felt very nice,” Redhead said.

“Broken” is a term meaning that a competitor advances to the next round.

In varsity Humorous Interpretation, junior Stephen Gialamas earned second and junior Elias Guzman won first place.

“Since I haven’t broken in a year, it was surprising to see me on the finals list. I felt pretty good when I finaled. I thought I was going to get fourth or fifth,” Guzman said.

In varsity Duo Interpretation, seniors Destiny Cobb and Madeline Torresluna earned third while seniors Thomas Kim and Samuel Pace won first place.

In varsity Original Oratory junior Jamie Ma won first place.

In varsity Expository Speaking, Ma earned third and sophomore Gabrielle Platon earned second.

The team continues to work hard and experience success. Save the date on Nov. 13 to support the team’s annual Fall Showcase in the Little Theatre.
