Softball approaches League
Softball season is here and the Lady Indians are ready to compete! Last season the varsity team was just one game short of making it to CIF with an overall record of 16-11. The team’s goal this season is to make it to CIF.
“We didn’t reach our ultimate goal of making CIF, but that gives us something to work for this year,” junior Genevieve Smith said.
Senior Madison Velez has high hopes for the team this season and what they can accomplish, now that the team is a little bit older and more matured.
“We are older this year so we have more confidence in ourselves and we believe that we can go far this year not only in league, but also in CIF as long as we work hard,” Velez said.
This year’s team has 11 returning varsity players, 3 of which are seniors. The team also has a starting freshman catcher, Mya Higareda. Higareda, who has been playing softball since she was young, is a little nervous, but more excited when she found out she made varsity.
“I was really excited coming onto the team, but I was a little nervous because I was the only freshman, so I was kind of nervous if the girls were going to like me or not,” Higareda said.
The team has already played seven games against: Yorba Linda, San Juan Hills, J Serra, Trabuco Hills, Whittier Christian, Segerstrom, and El Dorado; the team has a current record of 3-4.
The amount of rain has really impacted the teams field time and practice time, but they are still working hard to be the best.
“The rain has really been a factor to our practice time and being able to get on the field and work so I hope that we can work hard enough when we have the opportunity in order to be the best,” Velez said.
Senior Amanda Foglesong thinks that the team can go far this season if they work hard, not only physically, but work on the mental part of the game.
“Not getting down on ourselves so much, we play with a lot of heart, so sometimes that’s hard to overcome when you make an error,” Foglesong said.
Come out this season and support the girls as they work towards the title of league champions!
