Released on March 8, Marvel Studios’ new breakout film Captain Marvel explores a new decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: the 1990s. Set in a different time period, Captain Marvel focuses on superpowered Kree warrior Vers fighting against an alien invasion by the shape-shifting Skrulls, and finding an erased past life where she lived as an Air Force pilot named Carol Danvers.  

The film features an outstanding performance by Brie Larson as Vers/Carol/Captain Marvel, through her wit, humor, and emotion. The cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Jude Law as Yon-Rogg, Annette Bening as the Kree Supreme Intelligence, Lee Pace as Ronan, Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, and Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson.  

Captain Marvel has brought in good reviews across the internet, with a 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the sixth-largest opening weekend in the world, at 455 million dollars.

Highlights of the film include fun performances by Larson, Jackson, Mendelsohn, Lynch, and Law. The buddy-cop relationship between Carol and Fury is one of the most fun aspects of the movie, as well as the best-friend relationship between Carol and Maria, and Maria’s daughter Monica. More highlights include amazing visual effects for Captain Marvel’s powers, depicting the high-powered energy of her abilities, and the shape-shifting abilities of the Skrulls.

However, the film isn’t perfect. The film is rather predictable, due to Marvel’s normal formula for their movies. Some of the context is a little hard to understand, and the effects can be slightly messy as some points, but these hardly distract from the overall film.

Also, Goose the cat steals the whole movie.

Captain Marvel explores a bold new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and makes good use of the standard Marvel formula to create an amazing, action-packed film. Be sure to sit through the credits for a tease for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.
